Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. The Latin American Relief Fund (LARF) is a U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Donations to LARF are tax-deductible as provided by law for U.S. citizens and residents. For Canadians, we partner with CAF-Canada to enable you to claim a tax deduction as provided by Canadian law.

  • LARF is run by an all-volunteer Board of Directors and does not employ any staff. Our overhead is purposely kept very low, so that we can donate up to ninety-five percent of donors’ contributions to ABBA House and other charitable organizations working with migrants. By donating to LARF, you can be sure that your tax-deductible donation is helping those who need it most.

  • We are very protective of the confidentiality of the migrants that ABBA House serves, and are thus very careful and deliberate in making sure that we do not inadvertently facilitate “voluntourism.” Having said that, if you speak Spanish and have any relevant special skills, send us a message! People with skills in art therapy, physical therapy, massage, music and more can definitely find a way to volunteer.

  • Yes, in-kind donations are welcome! For example, recently someone donated a stair-lift to ABBA House, with LARF’s help. This enables persons with mobility limitations to go up and down the shelter’s flight of stairs more easily. Food, clothing, shoes, toiletries and the like are always useful, but check with us first so we can confirm what the shelter’s current needs are.

  • Yes. One good way to do this will be made available in the near future. LARF’s capital campaign for ABBA’s new long-term facility—the Cultural Center for Human Rights—will be accepting donations for personalized bricks or tiles that will be integrated into the architectural design. There will also be naming opportunities (for rooms, wings or buildings) for larger gifts.
